INTRODUCING THE WORKS OF STEPHEN ANTHONY DAVIDS – 508 Gallery
Stephen Anthony Davids is an East Ender whose paintings, drawings and sculpture are vital tools in the exploration of black identity and history. His latest exhibition examines topics as diverse as East End masculinity, slavery, the natural hair movement, gentrification and social mobility.
His sculptures are, in many cases, unabashed blue collar symbols. A pair of boxing gloves are immediately noticeable under a daubed title of Queensbury Rules; the historic link between East London and boxing unequivocally underscored.
The 508 Gallery, located as it is in the heart of Chelsea, is an ideal fit for his commentary on some of these subjects – particularly social mobility and gentrification.
508 Gallery, 508 Kings Road, London. 29 May – 13 June 2019
